Hair Testing

Hair testing is used to detect historical and habitual drug usage for up to 90 days in head hair and up to a year in body hair. Scroll to learn more general information.

Panel Information

Hair Testing starting as low as $179

It is important to note that quantitative values cannot be used to determine: Time, dosage, or frequency of drug use.

If you need a longer timeframe, body hair or nail testing may be a better option (6-12 months detection timeframes)

NOTE: We can test hair removed from a hairbrush HOWEVER, a significant amount of hair is needed and there is no timeline or name associated with the test. Call us for more details.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LEVELS

The level should not be used to determine how much a donor used or was exposed to a drug:

Levels in hair tests can't determine the amount or frequency of use. Higher levels are a good indication of use history but could also be a one-time use of a lot.  UV light and hair treatments only seem to affect THC or other acidic drugs. Dark hair does retain drugs more easily.

When testing any reservoir matrix, it is impractical to back-track to determine time, dosage or frequency. There are too many variables involved. The reported values (the numbers) have no therapeutic or clinical value. You cannot use the number to estimate how much the donor used or to what extent the donor was exposed.

About Hair Testing:

We offer different cut-off levels for some drugs; if you are looking for something specific, please fill out the contact us form.

**As of April 6th 2026, some of our hair/nail panels have changed. This site is up to date**

  • Detection Window: Drugs remain in hair until it grows out or is cut off. Head hair detects use up to 90 days, body hair 6–12 months.

  • Sample Size: Requires 120–200 head hairs (thickness of a Sharpie) or a large cotton ball of body hair.

  • Time Frame: Testing can cover 30 days to 1 year, depending on sample type and segmenting. 30-day segments are available for select panels.

  • Hair Growth Rate: Head hair grows ~½ inch per month. Testing typically reflects usage from 14 days before collection and looks back 90 days.

  • Drug Incorporation: Takes 10–14 days post-use for drugs to appear in hair/nails. For a potential negative result, wait 2 weeks + 90 days after last use before testing.

  • Segmentation: Only head hair can be segmented for specific time frames. Body hair and nails cannot. Segmentation allows specific results from each 30day timeline as a look into monthly usage.

  • Body Hair Growth: Grows and sheds irregularly, not trimmed like head hair. Detection window: 6–12 months.

  • Testing Process: Positive screenings proceed to confirmation testing using GC/MS and/or LC/MS/MS. These cannot determine time, dose, or frequency of use.

  • Confirmation Methods:

    • GC/MS – Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

    • LC/MS/MS – Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry (detects more compounds, minimal prep).

  • Panel Tests: Often include multiple drugs per category (e.g., Opiates, Benzodiazepines, Amphetamines).

  • EtG Alcohol Hair Test: Detects regular alcohol use up to 90 days; 30-day segmentation available.
